What are Super Shakes?
They are a meal in a glass.
A mix of protein and whole foods such as fruits, veggies and nuts.
Juice bars claim to have "healthy" shakes and smoothies but are often filled with sugar. Super Shakes are easy to make when you are short on time and are truly a high quality nutritious choice.
What you need
Chose 4-8 ounces of a liquid. Water, unsweetened milks such as almond, coffee, green tea, cow's milk are all great choices.
Protein powders not magic but they can be a great choice for your super shakes as they are convenient, taste good and high quality powders have nutrients that can keep you satisfied until your next meal. Whether you prefer whey, rice, pea, hemp or another source, look for powders that do not contain added colors, sugars and artificial flavors. If you can tolerate dairy, cottage cheese or great yogurt are great choices for your Super Shakes.
Berries, banana, apple, pineapple, mango....any fruit you like whether fresh or frozen can be a delicious addition to a Super Shake!
Spinach and kale can be added to your shake without adding flavor. Zucchini, cucumber, canned pumpkin, cooked sweet potato or any other vegetables are nutritious options.
Nuts, nut butters, flax seeds, avocado and coconut provide healthy fats and lots of flavor! Use 1-2 tsp or 1-2 thumb size portions, depending on your needs.
Blend it up!
After you have your ingredients put it all in a blender and blend that baby up! Pour it in a cup and you're set with a nutritious meal in a glass. You can top it with some shredded coconut, dark chocolate, granola or cinnamon for some added flavor and fun.
Remember...not all of these things are necessary. Add more veggies, use less fat, leave off the topper. Adjust to your nutritional needs.
